The Color of Watercolor, Philip Fabian

Philip Fabian is a San Francisco black and blue tattoo artist with 12 years of experience. We talked to Philip about the inspiration behind his abstract works.

I grew up inspired by artists like Roscoe and Pollock. I studied art and drawing, but I was inspired by the great people I met in the process. I also find a lot of inspiration in nature, and every time I walk through Golden Gate Park, I get a lot of inspiration. I often come home with ideas for new designs for birds or flowers that live there.

I like to get tattoos based on nature and animals. My client inspires me the most. I like to use geometry, brushes, and textures in my work. Of course, I like to use various colors.

My cousin ran a tattoo studio in his hometown. I saw him working, and I was immediately fascinated by it. Tattoos looked like magic to me.

I sometimes hand over my works freely, but I spend a lot of time on each design the day before work. After meeting the client for a consultation, I take all the references I have and all the thoughts and memories they express. These inspire me, and I combine them with my own hands.

I always try to incorporate the personality of the person I'm tattooing and the atmosphere that the work should have in it should have. That's why I don't like realism that much. I realized that abstract design can better express the atmosphere of life and the capricious personality.

I hope you can see tattoos and art in every customer's body around the world. Tattoo is my favorite art museum. You don't have to go directly into the entrance, and you can enjoy it all day. (laughs)
